Powhatan County Warrant Searches
Use the Virginia Online Case Information System for covered adult criminal and traffic case information, then search Powhatan GDC when the matter is local traffic or misdemeanor court. Search by your own name as it appears on the summons, case number, or hearing date. Save the result and compare it with the notice you received.
OCIS is not a warrant repository, and its statewide search cannot take a payment. A result can identify a case without showing a complete process history. If a warrant or missed appearance may be involved, call the issuing clerk; consider counsel before arranging surrender or bond.
- Search OCIS by name, case number, or hearing date for the court levels it covers.
- Select Powhatan General District Court in the local system for a traffic or misdemeanor case.
- Call the Circuit Clerk for felony matters or the combined clerk for GDC and JDR questions.
- Contact the sheriff or magistrate for service, issuance, or bond routing when directed.
- Request an existing record through FOIA if a copy is needed, then confirm status with the issuer.
Powhatan County Warrant Searches: Two Portals
The local GDC application asks the user to choose Powhatan, then search by name, case number, or hearing date. Name format follows last, first, and middle name if any. The statewide search has court-level, division, locality, and search-type choices. Neither screen offers a single control for every Powhatan warrant.
An eligible GDC case may show a payment link, but that does not prove an FTA warrant was lifted. Ask the clerk what remains after a missed hearing.
The official traffic search instructions explain those local controls and distinguish search from payment.
The image shows a public interface, not a sample warrant record or a confirmation that a process is inactive.
What a Warrant Search Asks For
Search options differ by system. A name can be shared by more than one person or appear in a different order, so use a case number once you have one. The hearing-date option can help locate a citation, but the summons remains the best reference for court and case details.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Court/locality | Selection | Yes for GDC | Choose Powhatan General District Court or the court named on the paper. |
| Name | Text | For name search | Last, first, middle if any; match the summons spelling. |
| Case number | Text | For case search | Use the court or citation number when available. |
| Hearing date | Date | For date search | Useful when locating a known court event. |
| Search by | Choice | Yes in OCIS | Name, case number, or hearing date; coverage depends on court level. |
Powhatan's instructions show no public date-of-birth filter or warrant-number field. Use the case or citation number on the paperwork; do not infer a format from another file.
Powhatan County Circuit Warrant Search Limits
Virginia does not offer a statewide Circuit Court search. The state's case-search help page says local availability varies. For a felony case, indictment, capias, or Circuit return, contact the Powhatan Circuit Clerk at 804-598-5660, 3880 Old Buckingham Road, Suite C. Ask about the case number, process, return, and any order that changed it.
A public name search can miss sealed indictment material. Virginia law allows an indictment to remain sealed until arrest. The clerk is the proper route for a case-specific question.
The Circuit Court's official page lists its clerk contact and schedule.
The clerk contact does not open sealed records.
Powhatan County Warrant Search Results
A case result may show the court, case or citation number, charge, hearing date, and a case action. It does not promise a warrant status field. Powhatan's public source review found no sample warrant listing or local warrant-number format, so a sample string would be invented. Ask the clerk whether a separate warrant, capias, service return, or recall order exists.
| Case or citation | Connects the result to a clerk's file; no public warrant format was found. |
|---|---|
| Charge and date | Shows the matter and scheduled hearing, subject to system coverage. |
| Court | Identifies the clerk who can confirm process and next steps. |
| Payment action | May appear for eligible GDC cases; it does not itself recall a warrant. |
| Service or recall | Ask the issuing court or serving agency for the current entry. |
The result may reflect a scheduled event without showing a later service return or recall order. If the screen is blank, first verify the court selected and the spelling on the summons, then ask the clerk whether a separate process record exists.
Powhatan County JDR Warrant Checks Need Calls
JDR cases involve juvenile, domestic-relations, and support matters. The state's public help page says JDR case information is not available online. Contact the combined General District/JDR clerk at 804-598-5665 and ask what may be disclosed about your own case. A case number does not remove statutory privacy limits for another person's file.
The combined clerk is at 3880-D Old Buckingham Road and lists hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Confirm details before visiting.
Powhatan's combined-court page provides the official routing point. Ask specifically about your own case, since the court cannot release protected juvenile or family details to every caller.
The combined page supports routing; JDR access remains restricted.
Powhatan County Warrants: Who Holds What
The issuing clerk holds the underlying court record. The Sheriff's Office may hold service or return details, while the magistrate handles initial process and bond routing. Virginia's VCIN/NCIC network is for criminal-justice users, not a public search. Powhatan has no incorporated city or municipal court layer, so there is no separate city police list to check.
For sheriff-held records, use the published general line or FOIA email. The Sheriff page lists 804-598-5652 and psofoia@powhatanva.gov, but it does not name a warrant desk or promise a complete roster.
Powhatan County FOIA Warrant Requests
Powhatan County accepts records requests through NextRequest, email, phone, fax, mail, or in person. Describe an existing item with reasonable specificity, such as a case number and a request for the status or return record. FOIA does not require staff to answer a general question or build a new warrant index.
The county reports within five working days, with a possible seven-working-day extension. It may charge actual staff time, copies, and postage; a deposit can be required when an estimate exceeds $200. A request is not an immediate clearance route.
The county request page explains submission methods.
Which Warrants Stay Restricted
Some process is withheld or limited by law. A Circuit indictment may be sealed until arrest. Juvenile law-enforcement and JDR information has separate confidentiality rules. Investigative material and protected personal details may also be redacted. Public access to a court case does not mean every warrant or service field is public. A clerk can explain what may be disclosed without revealing another person's protected record.
Key Rules:
Virginia Code § 19.2-192.1 allows an indictment to be sealed until arrest.
Virginia Code § 16.1-223 limits disclosure of identifiable juvenile justice information.
Powhatan County Sheriff Warrant Records
The Powhatan Sheriff's public page provides office contacts, not an online warrant roster, status filter, surrender calendar, or public warrant-number search. It does not identify a dedicated warrant desk or promise an update schedule. Use the published general number to ask where a service question belongs.
The Circuit or combined-court clerk confirms the underlying case and court order. A sheriff contact can route service information, but it does not replace the issuer's current record. If the question is about a copy of an existing sheriff record, request that item through the office's records channel.
The Sheriff's Office contact page is the official starting point; no public active-warrant list was located.
Powhatan County Warrant Record Custodians
The Circuit Clerk's office is in Suite C at 3880 Old Buckingham Road and handles felony files; posted hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The combined clerk at 3880-D Old Buckingham Road routes General District traffic and misdemeanor matters along with separate JDR records.
Call Circuit at 804-598-5660 or the combined clerk at 804-598-5665 with the court and case number. The published clerk hours differ, and the Sheriff's Office is in Suite A for service routing rather than docket copies.
Powhatan County Warrant Search Name Matches
In the local GDC application, a name search uses last, first, and middle name when known. A close spelling match is not enough to identify the right person; compare the case number, court, and hearing date against the summons before treating a result as yours.
The public search instructions do not identify a separate warrant-name index, alias control, or date-of-birth filter. If a result is unclear, give the clerk the exact name on the paper and ask which court record it belongs to.
